The winter of energy bill rises begins

Wednesday, 24 November 2010 05:43

This week is due to see the beginning of price rises across the board for home energy customers, with ScottishPower leading the way with a 2 per cent gas and an 8.9 per cent electricity rise effective from tomorrow (November 25).

Around 2.5 million ScottishPower customers are expected to be affected, costing an average increase of £52 each per year. ScottishPower is already the most expensive energy supplier and uSwitch.com claims that customers could save up to £419 per year by going elsewhere.

Only been given six days’ notice was given before the price rise, unlike British Gas and Scottish & Southern Energy who have given their customers several weeks’ advance warning before their price rises come into effect.

Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at uSwitch.com, says: "We've had the announcements; now cold reality bites as consumers are actually hit with the first full-scale energy price hike since 2008.

"It is now crucial that all consumers, no matter which supplier they are with, start to help themselves by making sure that they are paying the lowest price possible for their household energy.”
