As Scottish and Southern Energy customers are hit with a 9.4 per cent rise in the home energy bill today, moneysupermarket.com has carried out a nationwide analysis of energy deals to find which company offers the best deal in each region.

EDF Energy was found to be the best choice in all 14 UK regions, with households in Southern Scotland able to save more than £460 per year by switching their provider.

New customers who switch to EDF can also enjoy a £100 welcome bonus, which is available for a limited time. With Brits using 40 per cent of their total annual home energy in the winter months, now is the best time to switch.

Ofgem research shows 58 per cent of gas customers have never looked for a better deal, but the average Brit could save more than £400 per year if they shop around for the best deal online.

Scott Byrom, manager of energy at moneysupermarket.com, also advised customers to consider a fixed tariff to protect against future price rises, with OVO Energy offering a guaranteed rate of £993 per year.
